3-Phase Power Upgrades in Sydney

3 Phase Power Upgrades in Sydney

Most Sydney homes are supplied with single-phase power — a single live conductor delivering 230V at up to 80–100 amps. For the vast majority of residential applications, this is sufficient. But as the electrical demands of modern properties increase — high-output EV chargers, large ducted air conditioning systems, three-phase pool and spa equipment, workshop machinery, and commercial kitchen appliances — single-phase supply increasingly becomes the limiting factor.

A three-phase upgrade provides three live conductors, each 230V phase-to-neutral and 400V phase-to-phase, with a combined capacity typically rated at 63A per phase — dramatically increasing the total power available to the property. More importantly, it distributes large loads across three separate phases, reducing peak demand on any single conductor and enabling equipment that simply cannot operate on single-phase supply.

Focus Group Electrical manages three-phase upgrades from initial assessment through to final connection — coordinating with Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy for the supply upgrade, replacing the switchboard with a correctly specified three-phase distribution board, and completing all internal wiring and circuit work. We handle the entire process under one fixed quote.

The Difference, at a Glance

Three-phase doesn’t just add capacity — it shares large loads across three conductors, reducing peak demand on any single phase.

Who needs a 3-phase power upgrade?

Switchboard issues are often invisible until they cause a problem — and by then, the problem is usually urgent. These are the most common scenarios we encounter:

EV Charger Owners Wanting Faster Charging

A 7.2kW single-phase Level 2 EV charger delivers 40–50km of range per hour — more than adequate for most households. But high-mileage drivers, fleet operators, and multi-vehicle households wanting faster overnight charging or daytime top-ups may benefit from 11kW or 22kW three-phase charging, which requires three-phase supply. See our EV charger installation page for full detail.

Large Ducted Air Conditioning Systems

High-capacity ducted reverse-cycle air conditioning systems — particularly those rated above 14kW cooling capacity — often require three-phase supply for the outdoor compressor unit. In hot Sydney summers, a property with a large HVAC system on single-phase supply may experience significant load limitations and voltage drop issues that a three-phase upgrade resolves permanently.

Commercial and Light Industrial Properties

Commercial kitchen equipment, industrial refrigeration, workshop lathes and mills, large compressors, and commercial laundry equipment all typically require three-phase supply. Commercial clients relocating to a new premises or expanding existing operations often require a three-phase upgrade as the first step in any electrical fitout.

Swimming Pool and Spa Equipment

High-capacity pool heating systems, large filtration pumps, spa jets, and pool hoist equipment often specify three-phase supply. A three-phase upgrade allows this equipment to run at full rated capacity without overloading the existing single-phase supply.

What a 3-phase upgrade involves

We handle the distributor application and all internal work under one fixed quote.

Feasibility assessment

Confirm three-phase supply is available at the street; assess cost and complexity with the distributor.

Distributor application

We manage the application to Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy for the supply upgrade (lead times vary).

Switchboard replacement

The single-phase board is replaced with a correctly specified three-phase distribution board.

Mains cable replacement

The mains cable from meter to switchboard is replaced with correctly sized three-phase cable.

Circuit redistribution

Existing single-phase circuits are redistributed across the three phases to balance load.

New three-phase circuits

Dedicated circuits for three-phase equipment installed and connected.

Testing & commissioning

Full circuit testing, phase-balance verification and RCD testing before power-on.

Plan ahead · Three-phase lead times in Sydney

The supply upgrade is distributor-dependent — we plan around it

Three-phase supply upgrades require an application to, and work by, the electricity distributor (Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy). That step is outside our control, and lead times vary from a few weeks to several months depending on location and distributor workload — typically 4–12 weeks. We advise realistic lead times at the initial assessment and begin internal scope planning immediately, so we’re ready to complete the internal work the moment the supply upgrade is done.

    Frequently asked questions

Check your main switch in the switchboard. A single-phase supply has one main switch with a single pole (one lever). A three-phase supply has a three-pole main switch (three levers linked together). You can also check your electricity meter — three-phase connections typically have three sets of meter terminals. If you are unsure, call 1800 343 247 and we will confirm during the assessment.

Three-phase supply is available throughout the Sydney metropolitan area and most suburban areas. In some outer suburban and semi-rural areas, three-phase may not be available at the street — requiring a distributor upgrade that may have a longer lead time or significant cost. We confirm availability as part of the initial assessment.

No — a 7.2kW Level 2 EV charger operates on single-phase 32A supply. Three-phase is required for chargers rated 11kW or above. For most Sydney households, a 7.2kW single-phase charger is more than adequate. We assess the right solution for your specific EV, daily driving distance, and property during the free on-site quote.

We do. Focus Group Electrical manages the application to Ausgrid (northern/eastern Sydney) or Endeavour Energy (southern/western Sydney) for the supply upgrade, coordinates the scheduling, and completes all internal electrical work under one fixed quote. You deal with us, not the distributor.

The internal electrical work — switchboard replacement, mains cable, circuit redistribution — is typically completed in one to two days. The distributor supply upgrade adds time: typically 4–12 weeks depending on your location and current distributor workload. We advise on realistic timelines during the initial assessment.

Yes. Three-phase supply is available for residential properties across Sydney and is increasingly requested for high-output EV chargers, large HVAC systems, and pool/spa equipment. The process is the same as for commercial properties — application to the distributor, switchboard upgrade, and internal circuit work.
