Switchboard Additions in Sydney

Switchboard Additions in Sydney

Not every switchboard job requires a full replacement. In many cases, your existing board is structurally sound and has spare capacity — it simply needs to be extended or enhanced to support the way you use your property today. Switchboard additions cover a broad range of work: adding a new dedicated circuit for a high-draw appliance, installing a timer or photocell to automate outdoor lighting, fitting a contactor for pool equipment or garden irrigation, or adding a new sub-circuit for a home office or garage workshop.

Focus Group Electrical carries out switchboard additions for residential, commercial, and strata properties across Sydney. Every addition is assessed against the existing board’s capacity and protection before we recommend or quote — we will tell you upfront if the board needs a full upgrade before an addition can safely proceed, rather than discovering it on the day.

Types of Switchboard Additions We Install

From a single dedicated circuit to automated control devices — clipped into your existing board and certified on completion.

New Dedicated Circuits

High-draw appliances — ducted air conditioning systems, induction cooktops, EV chargers, solar inverters, hot tubs, workshop equipment — all require dedicated circuits with correctly rated breakers and, where required, Type A RCDs. Adding a circuit to your existing switchboard is the most common form of switchboard addition we carry out.

EV charger dedicated 32A circuit

The most requested addition in 2025–2026 across Sydney.

Solar inverter circuit with Type A RCD

Required before any solar grid connection.

Ducted air conditioning circuit

Dedicated circuit sized to the inverter’s rated draw.

Workshop or garage circuits

Additional power for tools and equipment.

Timers

A DIN-rail timer controls the circuit itself — not just the outlet — for outdoor lighting, irrigation pumps, pool filtration or hot water. Far more reliable long-term than smart plugs, and suitable for hardwired loads.

Photocells

A dusk-to-dawn controller switches outdoor lighting automatically by ambient light — driveways, security lighting, strata common areas and commercial signage. Lower-maintenance than a sensor on every fitting.

Contactors

A heavy-duty switching device for high-current loads — pool pumps, irrigation, large HVAC. Operated by a timer or low-voltage control circuit, switching the full load reliably without overloading the control side.

RCD Upgrades on Specific Circuits

Retrofit Type A RCDs on individual circuits — ideal where a new EV charger or solar system needs the correct RCD type but the rest of the board is adequate. Often the most cost-effective path.

When Can We Add to an Existing Board?

Switchboard Additions Sydney

A switchboard addition is feasible when the existing board:

  • Has physically available DIN-rail space for the new devices
  • Has a main switch with adequate rated capacity for the new combined load
  • Has modern circuit breakers in good condition — not ceramic fuse carriers
  • Has correct protection types (Type A RCDs) on existing circuits, or we can add them simultaneously

If the existing board cannot safely accommodate the addition — whether due to lack of space, undersized mains, or outdated protection — we will recommend a full upgrade and quote both options for comparison. We never compromise your safety to avoid a more involved scope of work.

    Frequently Asked Questions

In many cases yes — if the existing board has spare DIN-rail space, an adequately rated main switch, and modern circuit breakers in good condition. We assess this as part of every addition quote. If the board cannot safely support the addition, we will recommend a full upgrade and quote both options.

A straightforward circuit addition to an existing capable switchboard typically takes 2–4 hours. This includes running the new cable to the outlet or appliance location, installing the breaker and any required RCD in the switchboard, testing, and issuing the CCEW. More complex cable runs may take longer.

Under AS/NZS 3000:2018 Amendment 2, a Type A RCD is required on all EV charger circuits. Type AC RCDs are not acceptable — they cannot detect the pulsed DC leakage current produced by EV charger electronics. For three-phase EV chargers rated 11kW or above, a Type B RCD is required.

Yes. A DIN-rail timer installed in the switchboard controls the entire lighting circuit — more reliable than individual sensor fittings. We assess your existing board, confirm circuit capacity, install the timer module, and commission and test the time schedule before leaving. A CCEW is issued on completion.

Yes. Any new circuit, addition of a protection device, or modification of an existing circuit is regulated electrical work under the NSW Electricity (Consumer Safety) Act 2004 and requires a CCEW. From 1 July 2026, all NSW CCEWs must be lodged digitally via the BCNSW eCert portal. We issue your CCEW the same day.

Yes, provided the existing board has space and adequate capacity. The solar inverter requires a dedicated circuit with a Type A RCD — we add both simultaneously. If the board uses Type AC switches or has ceramic fuses, we will recommend addressing this as part of the solar circuit addition.
