Switchboard Services in Sydney

Electrical Upgrades

Your switchboard is the nerve centre of your property’s entire electrical system. Every circuit, every appliance, every safety device in your home or business connects through it. When it is outdated, overloaded, incorrectly protected, or simply worn out, the consequences extend well beyond the occasional tripped breaker — you are operating an electrical system that cannot safely do what you are asking it to do.

Focus Group Electrical provides the complete range of switchboard services for Sydney homes, businesses, and strata properties. With over 25 years of experience across residential properties in the St George district and Sutherland Shire, commercial premises across Sydney, and strata buildings of all sizes, our licensed switchboard electricians bring the expertise and the tools to assess, upgrade, maintain, and certify your switchboard correctly.

Every switchboard job we complete — regardless of scope — comes with a fixed written quote before work begins, a licensed electrician on site, and a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW) issued on completion.

Who needs switchboard work?

Switchboard issues are often invisible until they cause a problem — and by then, the problem is usually urgent. These are the most common scenarios we encounter:

01. Pre-1990 homes never upgraded — ceramic fuses, no RCDs, and insufficient capacity for modern loads.

02. Landlords preparing rentals for new tenancies — safety-switch compliance is a legal requirement in NSW for rental properties.

03. Property buyers completing due diligence — we inspect switchboards before exchange and report on compliance and remediation.

04. Strata managers with common-area boards — scheduled maintenance, emergency-lighting compliance and RCD testing programs.

05. Solar, EV charger or ducted A/C installs — all require switchboard assessment before connection.

06. Commercial tenants fitting out new premises — sub-board installation, additional circuits and compliance certification.

07. Anyone with warning signs — breakers tripping, lights flickering under load, or a board that generates heat or a burning smell.

NSW Regulatory Reminder · From 1 July 2026

CCEWs must be lodged digitally via the BCNSW eCert portal

From 1 July 2026, all Certificates of Compliance for Electrical Work in NSW must be lodged digitally — paper and PDF submissions will no longer be accepted. Focus Group Electrical is fully registered for digital CCEW lodgment. Every switchboard job we complete, from a single RCD replacement to a full board upgrade, is documented and lodged correctly, giving you a permanent digital record you can verify at any time.

    Frequently asked questions

The clearest signs are: ceramic fuse carriers instead of modern circuit breakers; no safety switch (RCD) TEST buttons on the switchboard; circuit breakers that trip regularly under normal household load; a switchboard that feels warm to touch or has a burning smell; and a switchboard that has no spare circuit slots for new appliances, solar panels, or an EV charger. A switchboard inspection gives you a documented assessment and clear recommended actions.

A circuit breaker protects your wiring and property from overload and short-circuit faults — it trips when current exceeds a set level. A safety switch (RCD) protects people from electrocution by detecting earth leakage current and cutting power in 10–30 milliseconds. Both are required under AS/NZS 3000 on all new and modified electrical installations. Many older Sydney homes have circuit breakers but no RCDs.

Safety switches are mandatory on all new and modified electrical work under AS/NZS 3000. For rental properties in NSW, landlords must have safety switches on all power circuits — this is a tenancy obligation. For owner-occupied homes with pre-existing wiring, they are not currently mandated retroactively, but their absence is a known electrocution and fire risk that we strongly recommend addressing.

Most residential single-phase switchboard replacements are completed in a single working day, including the temporary power disconnection coordinated with the supply authority, board removal and replacement, circuit testing, and CCEW issue. Three-phase upgrades or boards with complex wiring may take two days. We give you a clear timeline when you book.

Yes — we require access to the switchboard for the duration of the job, and we coordinate the temporary power disconnection with you and your household. We give you advance notice of exactly when power will be off and aim to restore it by end of the working day.
